BANDUNG (12/30/2019) - Aircraft Nir Awak (PUNA) type Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) which is able to fly continuously for 24 hours is an indispensable vehicle to help maintain the sovereignty of NKRI from the air which is very efficient and can reduce potential loss of life (without a pilot). The need for efficient air surveillance continues to grow along with the increasing threat of border areas, terrorism, smuggling, piracy, and theft of natural resources such as illegal logging and illegal fishing.
The initiation of the development of PUNA MALE has been started by the Ministry of Defense Balitbang since 2015 involving the TNI, the Director General of the Ministry of Defense, BPPT, ITB, and PT Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero). Where the agreed draft needs and objectives (DR&O) will be operated by the TNI, especially the Air Force. The design process begins with preliminary design activities, basic design by making twice the wind tunnel model and the results of tests in 2016 and 2018 at BPPT, as well as making engineering documents and drawing in 2017 with the budget from the Ministry of Defense and BPPT. In 2017 a joint agreement was formed in the form of the Unmanned Aircraft Consortium (PTTA MALE) with members consisting of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense namely the Directorate General of Pothan and Research and Development Agency, the Agency for Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), Indonesian Air Force (Dislitbangau), Bandung Institute of Technology / ITB (FTMD), BUMNs namely PT Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero) and PT Len Industri (Persero). In 2019 the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN) entered as a member of the consortium.
The year 2019 begins the manufacturing phase, which begins with the design structure process, the calculation of finite element method, making 3D drawings, and detailed 2D drawings done by BPPT engineers and supervised by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (Persero). Then proceed with the process of making tooling, molding, molding and then fabrication with the pre-preg process with autoclave. In this year also procured Flight Control System (FCS) produced in Spain which is projected to be integrated in the first prototype of PUNA MALE which has been manufactured by PT Dirgantara Indonesia in early 2020. The integration process is carried out by BPPT engineers and PT Dirgantara Indonesia which has been get training to integrate and operate the control system.
In 2020, 2 (two) prototype units will be made, each for the purpose of flight testing and structural strength testing at BPPT. In the same year, the process
Military product certification will also begin and it is hoped that by the end of 2021 a type certificate will have been obtained from the Ministry of Defense's Feasibility Center (IMAA).
The activity of integrating weapons systems on the PUNA MALE prototype was carried out starting in 2020 and it was projected to have received military product type certification in 2023.
It is hoped that with this independence, PUNA MALE made in Indonesia can fill the needs of the Indonesian Air Force squadron to be able to oversee the territory of the Republic of Indonesia through air rides. In addition, activities can grow domestic industries in accordance with the mandate of Law No. 16 of 2012 concerning the Defense Industry. To coincide with the PUNA MALE roll out event, the Head of BPPT, Hammam Riza and PTDI's Managing Director, Elfien Goentoro also signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Resource Utilization, as well as Facilities and Infrastructure.
The scope of this Memorandum of Understanding includes preparing PTDI aircraft to meet BPPT needs, developing Human Resources, utilizing facilities and infrastructure and potential provision of aircraft maintenance support, including operations.
