ABU DHABI (12/17/2019) - Indonesia is increasingly establishing itself to be a Center of Excellence (CoE), for the field of vaccines and biotechnology for countries that are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). This was conveyed by the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Terawan Agus Putranto, at the Meeting of the Minister of Health who joined the OIC or The 7th Islamic Conference Of Health Ministers (ICHM) in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which was held on 15-17 December 2019.
The existence of this CoE, received praise from OIC member countries for the progress in the development of the Center of Excellent (CoE) Vaccine and Biotechnology of the OKI Minister of Health of the United Arab Emirates and Chair of the 7th ICHM Conference, Abdurrahman Muhammad al-'Uwais.
Further development of CoE, supported by OIC member countries to achieve the independence of OIC countries in fulfilling drugs, vaccines and health technology in accordance with Resolution number 4/7-ICHM "Self-Reliance in Supply and Production of Medicines, Vaccines and Medical Technologies ".
In the welcoming speech of the Indonesian delegation delivered by Terawan, conveyed that the vision of the formation of CoE was to realize independence in making vaccines and other biological products among OIC participating countries. "In addition to the vision to establish independence, the formation of this CoE must be emphasized in building capacity in the production of vaccines and other biotechnology products, particularly in terms of management, expertise, production, research and development and distribution of Biological products," Terawan said.
Terawan added that the CoE which was established in 2018 at the Jakarya by former RI Minister of Health Nilla Moeloek, and several ambassadors of the OIC country, had given birth to the CoE secretariat located in the Republic of Indonesia Ministry of Health, and two laboratory facilities namely at Bio Farma, which would be the place to carry out workshops and training for OKI members, equipped with facilities for technology transfer, research collaboration and development, which are equipped with upstream and downstream facilities.
The second laboratory; located in the Center for Science and Technology Research (Puspitek) located in the Ministry of Research, Technology, Serpong, South Tangerang City, was established to strengthen technology-based research and innovation and aims to be a center of collaboration between research in the innovation of life science products.
At the end of his speech, Terawan invited OIC members to visit the Center of Excellence laboratory at Bio Farma and make full use of it in accordance with the needs of OIC members.
Meanwhile Bio Farma Director of Operations, as well as a member of the delegation in the 7th ICHM event from Indonesia, Rahman Roestan, said that Bio Farma as a pharmaceutical SOE has taken on its global role, becoming a motor for OKI members to conduct joint research, with the aim of creating independence for the country - OIC countries make vaccines that comply with the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO).
"With the appointment of Indonesia as a center of excellence for biotechnology and vaccines, the role of Bio Farma will play its global role, which is divided into three stages. The first or short term, through increased knowledge in vaccine handling (distribution), the second in the medium term, assisting in technical support in making vaccines, and in the long term will be carried out in the form of research collaboration to find the latest vaccine, to strengthen, global health ", Rahman said.
Rahman added, the appointment of Indonesia as CoE was a matter of pride because among the 57 OIC member countries, there were only seven countries that had vaccine producers, including; Indonesia, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Senegal, Saudi Aribia and Tunisia. But of the seven countries, the products with the most and were in accordance with WHO standards were only from Indonesia, Bio Farma.
"Therefore, Bio Farma is appointed as a center for research into vaccines and other biotechnology. And until 2019, at least 18 countries have visited CoE at Bio Farma in the workshop on cold chain system held by the Ministry of Health in 2018 - 2019, and in early December, the Pasteur de Dakar Institute's turn from Senegal who visited Bio Farma CoE, in the Reverse Linkage (RL) program organized by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Bappenas, Ministry of Health, BPOM on the theme of Development of a Reverse Linkage Project Between Senegal and Indonesia (Bio Farma) in Vaccine Production " , said Rahman.
