West Java Deputy Governor Invites Young Generation to Care About Agriculture

CIANJUR REGENCY - West Java Deputy Governor, Uu Ruzhanul Ulum, attended the launching of the 2019/2020 Rice Planting Movement (MT) in West Java Province with the theme 'Realizing Champion Rice Farmers' in Bojongpicung Village, Kab. Cianjur, Wednesday (12/18/19).

The achievement of West Java's strategic commodity performance itself, based on the Agriculture Service figures sourced from RKSP (Agriculture Statistics District Recapitulation) in 2018, rice production reached 11,494,099 tons of dry unhusked rice, corn production of 1,429,148 tons of dry shelled rice, and soybean production of 153,765 tons dry seeds.

This amount, according to Uu, is the hard work of all stakeholders in agriculture in an effort to increase the productivity of food crop commodities.

"Why am I so focused (in agriculture)? Because whatever technology is advanced, how fast is infrastructure development, but what we eat is the result of the hard work of agricultural people," Uu said.

Uu assessed that a number of West Java Provincial Government programs in the agriculture sector, such as GOWAH and Pantek Well, were successful. This can be seen from the increase in rice planting area. Based on the RKSP, rice planting area in 2019 increased by 13,565 hectares from the previous year. From 2,073,128 hectares in 2018 to 2,086,693 hectares this year.

Therefore, said Uu, these efforts and programs must be continued. The goal is that rice production in West Java continues to increase. He also appealed to the people of agriculture to keep their land from being converted.

"I ask, to the farmers, 'teu kenging ngical rice fields, teu kenging ngical taneuh' (don't sell rice fields, don't sell land). If it is sold later it will be difficult to buy again, because the price will be more expensive," he said.

On the same occasion, Uu asked farmers and officials in the field of agriculture to aggressively carry out movements to accelerate rice planting. This was done so that sustainable food self-sufficiency could be realized.

Uu also invited the younger generation to 'go down to the fields' and care about the conditions of agriculture.

"If our food security is disturbed, politics, economy, national security can be disrupted," he said.

"Do not use the old pattern, apply agricultural technology together with extension workers PPL, POPT, PBT, KCD and others," he added.

Meanwhile, Acting Regent of Cianjur Herman Suherman said that Kab. Cianjur has a superior type of rice, namely Pandan Wangi. He also hopes that this type of rice can encourage rice production in West Java.

"Usually Pandan Wangi can only be planted in 7 districts, especially in Warungkondang and Gekbrong. Moreover, the planting pattern does not use chemicals, but organically," Herman said.

Head of the West Java Province Food and Horticultural Crops Office Hendy Jatnika mentioned Kab. Cianjur as a strategic agricultural region due to geographical conditions. In addition, he said that a number of regions in Indonesia, including West Java, were experiencing planting delays due to the weather.

"It should be no later than the beginning of December. But because of the weather anomaly, the rain is just falling, there is a delay in planting time," said Hendy.

"But if we are determined to endeavor to harvest 2020 it will not be lacking, we can catch up with Cropping Movements like this."

"Then we must defend what we plant. Regarding pests, drought, we work together with all stakeholders with a shared cohesiveness," he added.
