BANDUNG CITY -- The Governor of West Java Ridwan Kamil led the big ceremony of West Java Contingent for the National Sports Week (PON) XX/2020 Papua in Gedung Sate Field, Bandung City, Wednesday (14/8/19). The Governor's advice (pepeling) was emphasized while jabbing the Kujang (a typical weapon of West Java) into the banana tree midrib.
"Insyaallah with determination and strong intention, West Java Champion, West Java must win," said Ridwan Kamil who was accompanied by the Chairman of National Sports Committee of Indonesia Ahmad Saefudin in the 'pepeling' procession.
1,446 West Java pride athletes who took part in the big ceremony were determined to be ready to attend regional training (pelatda) as a preparation for competing in PON --the biggest sports event in Indonesia.
To all athletes, coaches, and Sports (cabor) caretaker Emil --Ridwan Kamil's nickname-- left four messages that are first, the athletes must have a strong physique.
"Second, besides physical, West Java people have extraordinary intelligence. So, win the competition not only with sweat but also with tactics, and science (sport science)," Emil added.
The third is about emotional quotient as known as EQ, Emil asked the athletes and officials to be friendly and polite while in Papua.
"So, later in Papua, smile, greeting, friendly so that West Java's image is friendly not only in their hometown but also when they become guest and when competing too. Don't feel arrogant," Emil said.
"The fourth message is that spiritual quotient. Don't forget to pray. Humans try and pray, but God still determines," he said.
for 2020 PON Papua, the West Java contingent will participate in all of the 63 sports that is competed with 768 gold medals. Emil is also optimistic that the athletes can become general champion in PON 20th edition in accordance with the catchword 'West Java Champion' with a target of 165 gold.
Previously, West Java successfully became the general champion of the 2016 PON when West Java was the host with the acquisition of 217 gold, 154 silver, and 158 bronze with a total of 529 medals. Emil also hopes that positive trend continues until the next edision. "Insyaallah in PON 2020 become general champion, in 2024 also be general champion, and continously become general champion," said Emil.
Regarding operational funds for athletes and officials, Emil ensured that the funds had been disbursed for PON 2020. "I ensured funds for you (athletes and officials) for PON 2020 has been disbursed," he said.
According to the Chairman of National Sports Committee of Indonesia Ahmad Saefudin, this ceremony was held as a form of determination of West Java athletes and officials to become the general champion at PON 2020 in Papua.
"In addition to our determination to maintain (the general champion), we also want to get the full attention and support of the governor as our father. So that we will be in Papua smoothly, safely, and remain the general champion, "Ahmad said.
From the 1,446 athletes, said Ahmad, a selection process will be conducted so that the athletes who compete in Papua are the athletes who are seeded to get medals.
"Those who we will bring to Papua are the athletes who are really measured to get medals," Ahmad said.
From the 165 gold that are targeted by West Java, one gold participated as one of the targets of Taekwondo athlete, Muhamad Abu Kofal (20). He is optimistic that he will get a gold medal in PON 2020 Papua because before the Regional Training, he has received training and guidance.
"For the Regional Training, we are guided and fostered at the West Java KONI Building," Muhamad said.
"And we are targeting a gold medal and Insyaallah, West Java must be the general champion of taekwondo," he added.
For this reason, Muhammad and his team are ready to follow the Regional Training and will try their best and provide the best for West Java in PON 2020 Papua.
"In terms of physical, mental, everything has been prepared from the beginning before the election of the best athletes in West Java. We have prepared carefully and now, Alhamdulillah, everything is ready, "concluded Muhammad.
