BANDUNG - There has been an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 with its epicentre 101 km in Southwestern Garut regency, West Java, on 06/04/2016 at 21:45 am. The epicentre was in the Indian Ocean at a depth of 10 km, with no tsunami potential.
In a press release, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) mentioned the quake was fairly shallow and is located on the inside edge of the Eurasian plate so that felt by people around the South of West Java, Banten and Central Java partially. The quake was strong enough for 3-4 seconds in Garut. The quake was felt strongly also felt by people in Cianjur, Tasikmalaya, Sukabumi, Ciamis and Bandung. The area south of Garut received the harshest shocks because it was adjacent to the epicentre.
The earthquake with medium intensity being felt by people in Bogor, Lebak,South Pandeglang, Jakarta, Purwakarta and Ciamis.
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, Head of Data Information and Public Relations BNPB was quoted as saying in a press release mentioned the earthquake intensity was felt in Garut IV-V MMI, Tasikmalaya III-IV MMI, Bandung II-III MMI, and Lembang II-III MMI. There are no reports of damage and casualties caused by the earthquake. BPBDs still collecting data.
