BANDUNG - Earth Day is a momentum to reduce dependence on fossil fuel use and move towards environmentally friendly renewable energy. Estimates of Indonesia's renewable energy reserves reach up to 442 gigawatts but only 2% have been utilized.

The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LlPl) through the Research Center for Electric Power and Mechatronics has researched renewable energy and environmentally friendly transportation for the sustainability of nature

Indonesia's dependence on fossil fuel energy is still very high, reaching 37%, followed by gas and coal, which are 21.2% and 33.4% respectively.

"The government has set a target of 23% of renewable energy use can be achieved in 2025," explained Head of the LIPI Electric and Mechatronics Research Center, Budi Prawara after the Earth Day Media Tour: Renewable Energy and Environmentally Friendly Transportation in Bandung, Monday (22/4 / 2019)

Budi explained, LIPl Electricity and Mechatronics Research Center has several results of research related to renewable energy and environmentally friendly transportation.

"This is to support government policies in terms of conservation and energy diversification in the future," he said

Meanwhile, researcher at LIPI's Electricity and Mechatronics Research Center, Anjar Susatyo, explained several studies in the field of renewable energy, among others, the Pico Hydro water kinetic power generation technology.

"This power plant can produce electricity even from very small water discharge. "The shape of the turbine is simple, easy to install, and friendly to aquatic organisms such as fish," he explained

LIPI's Electricity and Mechatronics Research Center has also developed an intelligent Smart Microgrid converter that can convert energy sources from sunlight, wind, water and biogas to electricity use.

"The excess supply of energy produced is also stored in the battery & can be used during peak loads. This can be a solution to ease of access to renewable energy sources, "he said

While Researchers at LIPI's Electricity and Mechatronics Research Center, Arifin Nur, added to reduce the amount of air pollution from exhaust vehicles, LIPI's Electricity and Mechatronics Research Center has conducted research to develop Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (Hydrogen ICE) as a future solution to replace fuel oil.

"The products of combustion are only water, so they don't become pollution."
