Uu: We Need Geography Experts to Manage West Java

BANDUNG - Deputy Governor of West Java Uu Ruzhanul Ulum said, geography is increasingly needed not only by students but also the government including the West Java Provincial Government. According to Uu, a government policy is always related to the surrounding natural conditions. For this reason, professionals in the field of geography are needed.

"We also need geography experts, because a government policy is always related to the surrounding natural conditions so we need skilled hands to manage West Java," said the Deputy Governor, when opening Asean Geography Smart Competition 2019, on the campus of the Indonesian Education University (UPI) Bandung, Wednesday (2/13/19).

Uu gave an example, currently the West Java Provincial Government is working on 12 New Autonomous Regions (DOB) where the determination of the capital cannot be separated from geography.

"So that the area is not affected by disasters and can be useful for hundreds of years, which determines indicators such as geography," he said.

As a strategic buffer zone for the capital city, West Java currently only has 27 second-level regional governments. Even though the population is almost 50 million.

"One of the consequences is that the Budget Expenditure assistance received is less. We are trying to give birth to 12 DOBs, and this absolutely requires one of the geographical scientists," explained Uu.

Asean Geography Smart Competition 2019 was organized by the Student Executive Board of the Geography Education Student Association (BEM HMPG) UPI. Followed by high school students of the same level, students and teachers throughout Southeast Asia. The categories competed include geography olympiad for equivalent high school / vocational high school, geotrek, seminars for high school geography teachers and national scientific writing competitions for students.

"I hope the participants in the future contribute to building West Java through their geographic knowledge," said Uu.
