Retention Pond is a Solution to Overcome Floods in South Bandung

BANDUNG-West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan (Aher) said the annual flooding that occurred in South Bandung, which covering Baleendah, Bojongsoang, Kampung Andir, Dayeuhkolot, and beyond will be insurmountable if the Cieunteung area was converted into retention pond.

The artificial lake will functioned to accommodate rainwater temporarily to give opportunity to soak into the ground. In addition, the operations can be combined with a pump or a water gate.

According to Aher, this is a permanently solution in South Bandung to be be spared from annual floods, then the land acquisition in Cieunteng area should be completed soon. The stakeholders, government, and society needs to make a wise deal.

"I think all parties, including the people in Cieunteung must see this as settlement. If people refused it then it could be difficult to overcome this issues as well,” said Aher in South Bandung area, on Monday (14/03/16).

Geographically, South Bandung area is the Bandung Basin which is most sunken. So this region needs to be transformed to enable retention ponds. Because, if still utilised as a habitation, the resident have to be ready with the arrival of seasonal flooding routinely.

“Firstly is the concave environment in the region between Bandung basin. Secondly, in the basin of the habitants. Insha Allah if the retention pond 5-10 hectares could be made a deep pool, it would be enough to reduce the burden of flooding, environmental load must withstand flooding in the region,” said Aher.
