West Java is Ready to Accomodate Rohingya Refugees

BANDUNG-West Java Provincial Government is ready to accommodate Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar if they get direct instruction from the central government.

It was said by West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan (Aher) after following the solidarity action for Rohingya Muslims by doing long march from West Java Islamic Center to Gedung Sate Bandung, Friday (8/9/2017).

According to Aher, the issue of refugees is the authority of the central government, but if the West Java region gets orders to serve as a refuge location then it will be ready to implement it.

"Of course we are waiting for orders from the central government if we have to be accommodated in West Java we are ready to accept, refugee affairs of course the authority of the central government, but when ordered to accommodate, we must be ready," he said.

Indonesia has experience in shelter for refugees from other countries. It is said Aher, that time had accommodated the refugees from Vietnam for several years in Galang Island. Once the country is secure then they return to their home country as citizens of Vietnam.

"We have had the experience of accommodating Vietnamese refugees on Galang Island for a number of years, and the refugees have only returned to Vietnam after being declared safe so they are welcomed back as Vietnamese citizens," Aher said.

Aher added that the incident did not rule out the possibility to be experienced by Rohingya refugees from Myanmar to Indonesia, including West Java.

"Well, we have experience like that, maybe this happened to Rohingya refugees," he concluded. (MAT)
